Hike and Winter Tree ID with Dave Drogos – POSTPONED
Due to the wet conditions at La Tierra, the hike is postponed indefinitely. We will reschedule for the first Saturday possible.
What happens in the winter when all the leaves are off the trees, and we don’t know what species we are viewing? Come enjoy a hike in the beautiful woods at La Tierra Sanctuary and learn how to identify trees common to our area by their branches, bark, buds.
From Fremont, travel east on SR 120. Turn right on Cope Rd/1000 E, (depending on your navigator) which is also the IN/MI state line. La Tierra is approximately 1/2 mile south. A map is available here: https://goo.gl/maps/ZX8hd42LCRjbicHr7.
Seed Preparation in the Greenhouse
Thursday, January 30th at 2 PM
It’s time for the next step in the greenhouse! We will be doing a technique called cold-moist stratification (for select species), which is meant to replicate the conditions the seeds would experience outdoors. The process involves mixing seed with moist sand and sulfur, placing it in ziplock bags, and then labeling. After approximately 60 days, we will sow the seed into flats.
The greenhouse is located at 8385 E 300 N Howe, IN 46746
Nate Simons Presenting on the Natural History of Lakes Country
Thursday, February 13th at 6:30 PM
Not everyone knows that all of Indiana was not covered with woods! Come and learn of the habitats and diversity that greeted the early settlers as they arrived in NE Indiana. We will see how native people managed the land and how that compares with methods used today.
The presentation will be held at the Fremont Public Library, which is located at 1004 Toledo St, Fremont, IN 46737
