Eva and I spent the day taking care of the hairy vetch at Badger Barrens!
Check out this video of a bumble bee pollinating a wild white indigo! One of my favorite native plants to see this time of year!
After work one day Eva and I scouted out these showy lady’s slippers. It was truly amazing to be able to see these rare, endangered plants. I continue to be amazed by the beautiful world around us right here in Indiana!
John (the butterfly whisperer) had this hackberry emperor land on his hand at a job site. He was a very good model and sat still for multiple pictures… that goes for both John and the butterfly!
John in the field next to some great angelica, another cool native plant that can get super tall!
Here’s a close up of the great angelica with another bee pollinator.
Introducing our Intern for the summer Emma! She is hard at work here picking lupine seeds at Badger Barrens!
Another personal favorite native flower, butterfly milkweed! It’s such a spectacular shade of orange and it’s really starting to pop!
The next couple pictures are from my vacation to Colorado! Here is a plains pricklypear in bloom near Fort Collins!
Another beautiful view from Colorado! This is from the Soapstone Prairie Natural Area. It has been very cool to see short grass prairies!
An overlook of a short grass prairie, featuring my trusty mountain bike.
A glimpse into the stewardship of Soapstone Prairie Natural Area!
Upcoming Events
Native Plant Plug Tray WeedingSaturday July 12th, 10AM – noon
Each year, Blue Heron Ministries takes on a native wildflower planting project.  Volunteers gather together to plant seeds, then later weed, and finally install the native plants at a chosen location.

This year, plants are being raised and donated to Austin Park in South Milford, Indiana.  As part of this project, volunteers are needed to help weed the plant plug trays previously planted in February.  Come join John Brittenham as we weed these native plant plug trays that will be used for the Austin Park planting.  As an added bonus, this event will take place at the Brittenham residence (6730 S. 900 E. Wolcottville, IN 46795) and after the weeding event, tours of the property will be offered for those interested.

For anyone planning to come, please RSVP John at johnbrittenham@gmail.com by Friday July 11th.  Hope to see you there!
